Tile Roof Considerations

The roof of your home is the most vulnerable to the elements, required to stand up to months of extreme heat and cold, sometimes excessive winds and rain. A stylish roof also provides an aesthetic touch that can totally change the look of your home. Tile roofs are an excellent choice for all of these reasons and so much more. In Southern California, tile roofs are commonly used because not only are they beautiful, but tile roofs are energy efficient, fire resistant and even earthquake resilient.

Tile Roofs Are Energy Efficient

In 2008, the California Public Utilities Commission adopted the first long term plan for energy efficiency called "Energy Upgrade California" with goals and strategies to double energy efficiency by 2030. If you are energy conscious, then one of the best ways to make your home more energy-efficient is through your roof.  Even the best energy rated wall insulation and HVAC systems won't be as effective if you are losing or gaining heat through your roof.

Tile roofs are one of the most energy-efficient materials available as both clay and concrete tiles are great insulators helping hold warm or cool air inside your home.  The natural airspace around the tiles provides a heat barrier over your attic while also reflecting heat off their surface.  These factors make concrete and clay tiles some of the most energy efficient materials for your roof.

Tile Roofs Are Fire Resistant

Those of us in Southern California know all too well the impact of recent drought conditions and how it can lead to more fires that we experience each year.  Some areas are more prone to fires than others and one of the most susceptible areas to fire is the roof of your home.  Tile roofs have proven to be one of the best at resisting fire.  Concrete and clay roof files have a Class A fire rating because they can prevent flames from penetrating through to the attic or spreading across the roof.  Concrete and clay tiles also do not detach from the home and carry dangerous embers to neighboring yards and buildings.  If you are thinking of redoing your roof, then a tile roof is a wise choice.

Tile Roofs are Earthquake Resilient

As much as we love the wonderful climate we experience here in Southern California, one of the downsides is the possibility of earthquakes. Though most earthquakes are small, even the small ones can crack walls, knock down power lines and break pipes. Surprisingly, tests have shown that homes with tile roofs suffer less damage from earthquakes than homes without them. Though no building is totally earthquake resistant, if you are considering redoing your roof or even in building a new home, a tile roof is a very wise choice.

Keep in mind that the roof tiles must be installed in accordance with California Code to resist earthquakes. If you want your next roof to be tile, call EL PUMA ROFING to give you the best service and price.

There is a reason that tile roofs are so popular in Southern California.  In addition to being aesthetically pleasing and safe, tile roofs are one of the longest lasting roofing material.  Obviously it is important that the roof is prepared and repaired according to Code so that you can enjoy the benefits of your tile roof for decades to come. If you already have a tile roof that needs repair or replacement or if you are considering an entirely new roof on your home, then let us guide you on the proper steps so you reap all the benefits.
